Carolina Brewery

North Carolina Breweries profiled in Garden and Gun Magazine
I’m still not sure what this magazine is about because I didn’t see to many gun and or gardening articles however there was one article in the April/May 2010 issue that profiled NC breweries. Carolina Brewery, Foothills Brewing, Duck Rabbit, Highland Brewing and Natty Greene’s are featured as examples of great Southern breweries and points out that North Carolina is way ahead of the rest of Southern states when it comes to breweries and beer culture. No kidding!

Asheville Brewing
And by now you’ve heard that President Obama spent some time in Asheville over the weekend and the enterprising folks at Asheville Pizza and Brewing made up some bombers called “President’s Spring Break Ale.” More on Mountain Xpress, plus this NBC video clip that mentions the brew:

2010 Brewgrass Festival
After a little online discussion about moving the date to accommodate local breweries attending Great American Beer Fest, Brewgrass organizers are sticking with the original plan: September 18th, 2010. Brewgrass Festival benefits Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Western North Carolina. Band line up to be announced. Brewgrass is hands down my favorite beer festival. Tickets go on-sale this Saturday through their website: http://www.brewgrassfestival.com/

Foothills Sexual Chocolate in Draft Magazine
I guess the editors of Draft Magazine put together a list of naughty named beers and Winston Salem’s Foothills got the top slot with their Sexual Chocolate stout. How did I miss that one a month ago? Check it out with this link: http://draftmag.com/magazine/articles/130

Carolina Championship of Beer 2010: Winners

This past weekend, in near perfect weather, the 8th Annual Hickory Hops festival took place and with it came the announcement of the winners of the Carolina Championship of Beer.

This year’s Carolina Championship of Beer saw nearly 300 beers judged from 40 breweries. All breweries who attended the festival were eligible to enter the CCB competition. North Carolina was best represented with 31 breweries. Georgia sent four and South Carolina had three delegates. Two local distributors – United Beverage and sponsor Best of Beers – entered craft beer from their portfolio. 29 gold medals, 62 silvers and 73 bronze medals were awarded, listed here, in order of category. You may notice that some categories do not have all three medals listed – in those cases only the medals listed were awarded. Categories with multiple listings per medals had multiple beers that scored high enough to medal. Only categories with entries/medals are listed. Any beer that won a gold medal was eligible for Best in Show prizes (listed last).

NC Breweries Win Multiple Awards at World Beer Cup 2010

What is the World Beer Cup? It’s the world’s largest beer competition. I can’t summarize it any better than the Brewers Association press release.

Brewers from six continents earned awards from an elite international panel of judges this week in the 2010 Brewers Association World Beer Cup—the world’s largest-ever commercial beer competition. The eighth bi-annual competition announced awards to brewers from 19 countries ranging from Australia and Italy to Iceland and Japan.

This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,330 beers entered in 90 beer style categories. The entries in each category were eligible for gold, silver and bronze awards. Judges presented a total of 268 awards.

The 2010 World Beer Cup eclipsed the record of the Brewers Association’s own Great American Beer Festival (GABF) to become the largest commercial competition ever. There were 3,308 entries judged in the 2009 GABF, compared to the 2010 World Beer Cup’s 3,330 entries judged.

“Brewers from around the globe participate in the World Beer Cup to win recognition for their creativity and brewing ability,” said Charlie Papazian, president of the Brewers Association, the U.S.-based trade association that has put on the competition every two years since 1996. “For a brewer, a World Beer Cup gold award allows them to say that their winning beer represents the best of that beer style in the world.”

There’s a full World Cup Fact Sheet that you can explore, but let’s get to the important part – the local heroes!

North Carolina came out with three silvers and a gold!

Silver: Herb and Spice Beer or Chocolate Beer

Outer Banks Brewing Station, Kill Devil Hills, NC

Silver: American-Style Imperial Stout

Foothills Brewing, Winston-Salem, NC

Gold: Sweet Stout

Congrats to all of our local winners! Go try some of that beer!

‘Beltline Brew Tours’ Gets Underway This Saturday.

Long a twinkle in founder William Holland’s eye, Beltline Brew Tours will embark on its first tour this Saturday, April 3rd.

Beltline Brew Tours provides up to 30 people a private tour of 3 different breweries in the Triangle. Customers will meet at a brewery, get on a 30 passenger mini-bus, and enjoy a comfortable ride around the Triangle to visit and support our local breweries. Traveling between breweries will give customers the opportunity to play beer trivia for a chance to win special prizes from Beltline Brew Tours as well as ask questions about the breweries, beer, and brewing in general. At each brewery, customers will be treated to a behind the scenes/”private” look at the facility and get to sample their beer on tap at that given time.

“I am a beer lover, and for years have been aware of many local breweries that the Triangle has to offer,” said Holland, “so, I came up with a way to spread the word, and to do it in a fun and safe way. I’m very excited and pleased to offer this service to anyone and everyone over the legal drinking age.”

Beltline Brew Tours will open with one tour available visiting LoneRider, Triangle Brewery, and Natty Greene’s Brewpub in Raleigh, but they hope to grow to include many more of the numerous microbreweries in the area.

Make sure to book your tour, now!

You can do so online via eTix or through the Beltline Brew Tours website.
