Oktoberfest and Beer Festivals that Cover the State

It’s fall – and that means two things: Oktoberfest and Beer Festivals.

In the next few weeks look for Oktoberfest beer releases from The Carolina Brewery (already out!), Rock Bottom, and Liberty as well as the Cottonwood Pumpkin Ale release from Carolina Beer and Harvest Time from Big Boss. It’s a great month to enjoy good North Carolina Beer!

What’s more? In the next month, no matter where you are in North Carolina, you’ve got a beer festival nearby.

First up, on September 18th, is Brewgrass in Asheville. In their words: Each year in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we gather over 40 American breweries to showcase more than 120 different beers. We add a great lineup of national and regional bluegrass musicians that, in the past, has included such notables as Cadillac Sky, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dry Branch Fire Squad, J.D. Crowe, The Osborne Brothers, Norman Blake, Tony Trischka, Jim Lauderdale, Valerie Smith, Tony Furtado, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Sons Of Ralph. We also feature a variety of area food vendors and plenty of water. Hope you got your tickets on the weekend that they went on sale, though, because that’s when they sold out.

Next, on September 25th, is the 12th Annual Charlotte Oktoberfest which promises

  • Live entertainment on the big stage at the North end of the stadium.
  • The chance to put your skills to the test on games like table tennis, foosball, corn hole and many others in the Creative Loafing Beerlympic Village at the South end of the stadium.
  • Food vendors serving some of the tastiest brats, hot dogs, pretzels, and more.

    • As well as a collectible 5-oz. Charlotte Oktoberfest Tasting Glass, and of samples from over 350 of the finest craft brewed beers in the Southeast and from around the world.

    Next up, on October 9th in Durham, is the All About Beer World Beer Festival: Durham which is being held, this year, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The World Beer Festival is one of the best festivals in the Southeast – don’t miss it. The beer lineup should be posted soon, keep an eye out for it!

    Tickets are on sale through the Durham Bulls Box Office.

    Finally, the coup de grace, on October 16th at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, is the Lighthouse Beer Festival.

    The Lighthouse Beer Festival, in its ninth year, brings over 70 craft breweries from around the world to Wilmington, NC. This year, the festival will be held at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater to accommodate the growing enthusiasm from local (and national) beer lovers. Admission is $30/adv $40/day of which includes a collectible festival glass for tasting from the over 300 different beers available from 1pm-5pm on Saturday October 16th. Live performances from Acoustic Syndicate and local Wilmington bands will occupy the amphitheater’s stage during the festival. Proceeds from the event go to The Carousel Center; a 501c charity that aids abused and neglected youth. A free shuttle service is provided to help festival-goers get home safely.

NC Beer in the next two weeks.

You may have thought that North Carolina Beer was taking a little summer vacation, but it’s not true! There area few events coming up over the next couple of weeks that you should know about.

First up! This Saturday from 3PM to 9PM head over to the Aviator Brewery at 209 Technology Park Ln. Fuquay Varina, NC check out the Aviator Music Fest and Gulf Oil Spill Fundraiser. They brewed up a Black IPA to help raise money for the Florida Aquarium to assist with the oil spill, they’ll have live music and a few new beers on check it out. There’s no cover – just go get some great beer for a great cause!

On Tuesday, July 20, head over to American Brewmaster in Raleigh from 6PM to 7PM to meet Ray Daniels of the Cicerone program and author of Designing Great Beers

Next – make sure you head over to the Busy Bee Cafe in Raleigh next Wednesday for a special tapping of a Knob Creek aged Foothills Porter, exclusively released at the Busy Bee – the keg gets tapped at 6PM. Get it while it lasts!

On July 31st, go check out North Carolina’s largest hop farm at their First Annual Hops Festival. Check out their new trellising system and weed control system! See an oast at work! Food! Homebrew! It doesn’t get much better than this. 11:30 – 1:30 PM at Echoview Farms in Weaverville, NC. Click the link for details.

Finally, don’t forget about the upcoming Pleasure Island Brewery Invitational in Carolina Beach on July 31st from 3PM to 8PM. Proceeds to go the Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project and your North Carolina Brewers Guild – the Guild will be in attendance, make sure you swing by and say hi!

Tickets for Brew Bern Beer Fest On Sale Now

New Bern will be hosting their first annual beer festival at the Riverfront Convention Center this summer on June 26, 2010. This 45,000 square foot venue is a first class, state of the art building located downtown in the city’s historic district on the Trent River waterfront. The festival will coincide with New Bern’s 300th birthday celebration and will focus on regional micro breweries.

Beer Army’s intent is to develop a craft beer scene and community in Eastern North Carolina by supporting our regional breweries. We feel the best way to accomplish this goal is by hosting a premier beer festival.

“We are excited to be associated with and raising money for Hope for the Warriors in this inaugural event.” said festival director Dustin Canestorp. Beer Army has chosen this charity due to their fiscal restraint in that 92% of every dollar donated goes to those in need. Hope for the Warriors is a non-profit charity whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for U.S. service members and their families nationwide who have been adversely affected by injuries or death in the line of duty. Our community has a strong sense of military service as we have three major military bases within a 50 mile radius.

Tickets went on sale on May 1st to the general public and are $35 in advance – $40 day of the event. Visit the festival website at www.brewbern.com for more information and updates.
