AUGUST NC BEER NEWS

Here are some of the better stories to make their way around the North Carolina beer world. Asheville Scene in WSJ Asheville, a Blue Ridge Mountain town of 75,000, has 10 breweries, with two on the way. That can’t compare with the 40 in Portland, Ore., but it stacks up to other beer havens like Milwaukee and Boulder, Colo., which both have fewer than a dozen. “Asheville is definitely on the map and well recognized in the craft-brewing industry,” says Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association in Boulder. Full story on: online.wsj.com Nantahala Brewing Company Nantahala brewer Chris Collier explains his story and why North Carolina is a great place for beer in the south: “Basically, the reason I went to North Carolina is threefold: You can self-distribute, we can have a taproom and sell off-premise, and as you grow your business, you can write your contract anyway you want,” Collier said. Collier estimates North Carolina has more breweries and brewpubs than the rest of its Southern neighbors combined. “That is not coincidence,” he said. Brewers pay expensive excise taxes — about $25 per keg — on their beer, but it is a price that allows them to operate their businesses with relative freedom READ THE WHOLE STORY HERE Nantahala Brewing CONGRATS TO Jason McCammon The Hendersonville, N.C., resident, who will turn 30 in a couple of weeks, now has something else to celebrate besides the milestone birthday. His award-winning home-brew — a German-style dark lager called Monkey’s Uncle Munich Dunkel — has been released commercially by Olde Hickory Brewery and is available at a few Asheville-area bars and restaurants. In late April, McCammon’s beer won a Best of Show gold medal at the Olde Hickory Pro-Am home-brew competition, beating out 130 other entries from the Southeast. COMPLETE STORY FOOTHILLS EXPANSION Video from WXII shows Foothills staffers at brewpub and new production facility in Winston Salem. http://www.wxii12.com/r-video/28781866/detail.html Brewmaster Jamie Bartholomaus said the brewery has purchased a building off Stratford Road to start bottling its beer. The expansion allows production to move from a 7,000-square-foot space to a 48,000 square-foot-space. The current facility can produce two 22 ounce bottles each minute. The new facility, which will be operational within the next six weeks, will boost production to about 100 bottles per minutes, owners said. MOTHER EARTH TOUR Micro Beer Reviews posted this video of the Mother Earth Brewery: BELT LINE BREW TOURS Crossdrinker.com posted this video of Beltline Brew tour outside the beltline tour of Durham, featuring Bull City Burger, Fullsteam & Triangle brewing. TASTY BEVERAGE OPENS Sean Pratt of Cary, graduated from Cary High School in 2002 and then went to NCSU, graduating in 2007. While studying in Sweden he fell in love with craft and specialty beers. He partnered up with Johnny Belflower (Rocky Mount Senior High School and Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida). After years of planning they have opened a new shop called Tasty Beverage Company at 327 W. Davie St. Suite 106, in Raleigh in the historic Warehouse District of Downtown Raleigh. carycitizen.com © 2011 Craft Beer Collective / Away Team Media Bringing you the craft and culture of beer in North Carolina --> Raleigh, Durham, Asheville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Wilmington, NC and beyond Contact us at dave (at) away (dash) team (dot) com

American Brew Master in Raleigh

American Brewmaster has announced details of the The Piedmont Brewer’s Cup homebrew competition.

Here is the email that went out earlier today:

Greetings Fellow Homebrewers,

It has been a long time coming but American Brewmaster is proud to officially announce our first annual homebrew competition: The Piedmont Brewer’s Cup! The competition is an AHA/BJCP-sanctioned competition and will cover all beer styles with the exception of fruit and sour beers. Awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winners of each category and there will be special prizes for the Best of Show winners.

The 1st Place Best of Show winner will have their recipe recreated into an extract and all-grain kit to be sold at the shop. They will also receive a portion of the profit made from each kit for 1 full year along with their name engraved on the Brewer’s Cup, and a free entry coupon to enter into the 2011 National Homebrew Competition. A portion of the kit sales will also be donated to Pints for Prostates as well.

The competition is open to 5 states: NC, SC, GA, VA, & TN. All brewers will receive feedback from qualified beer judges so this competition is a good way to get good, honest feedback on your recipes and brewing skill.

Register your entries here.

There will be a $6 entry fee along with a 6 entry limit. However, if you have purchased at least $20 or more for your recipe from American Brewmaster the fee will be waived. You will need to present a receipt with your entry as proof of purchase. Please make note on your receipt of what you used in your beer for ease of processing your entry.

Online registration will be open from October 1st to November 5th and all physical entries must be received no later than 5pm on Saturday, November 6th. Oktoberfest and Beer Festivals that Cover the State

It’s fall – and that means two things: Oktoberfest and Beer Festivals.

In the next few weeks look for Oktoberfest beer releases from The Carolina Brewery (already out!), Rock Bottom, and Liberty as well as the Cottonwood Pumpkin Ale release from Carolina Beer and Harvest Time from Big Boss. It’s a great month to enjoy good North Carolina Beer!

What’s more? In the next month, no matter where you are in North Carolina, you’ve got a beer festival nearby.

First up, on September 18th, is Brewgrass in Asheville. In their words: Each year in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we gather over 40 American breweries to showcase more than 120 different beers. We add a great lineup of national and regional bluegrass musicians that, in the past, has included such notables as Cadillac Sky, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dry Branch Fire Squad, J.D. Crowe, The Osborne Brothers, Norman Blake, Tony Trischka, Jim Lauderdale, Valerie Smith, Tony Furtado, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Sons Of Ralph. We also feature a variety of area food vendors and plenty of water. Hope you got your tickets on the weekend that they went on sale, though, because that’s when they sold out.

Next, on September 25th, is the 12th Annual Charlotte Oktoberfest which promises

  • Live entertainment on the big stage at the North end of the stadium.
  • The chance to put your skills to the test on games like table tennis, foosball, corn hole and many others in the Creative Loafing Beerlympic Village at the South end of the stadium.
  • Food vendors serving some of the tastiest brats, hot dogs, pretzels, and more.
  • As well as a collectible 5-oz. Charlotte Oktoberfest Tasting Glass, and of samples from over 350 of the finest craft brewed beers in the Southeast and from around the world.

    Tickets are still available.

Next up, on October 9th in Durham, is the All About Beer World Beer Festival: Durham which is being held, this year, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The World Beer Festival is one of the best festivals in the Southeast – don’t miss it. The beer lineup should be posted soon, keep an eye out for it!

Tickets are on sale through the Durham Bulls Box Office.

Finally, the coup de grace, on October 16th at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, is the Lighthouse Beer Festival.

The Lighthouse Beer Festival, in its ninth year, brings over 70 craft breweries from around the world to Wilmington, NC. This year, the festival will be held at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater to accommodate the growing enthusiasm from local (and national) beer lovers. Admission is $30/adv $40/day of which includes a collectible festival glass for tasting from the over 300 different beers available from 1pm-5pm on Saturday October 16th. Live performances from Acoustic Syndicate and local Wilmington bands will occupy the amphitheater’s stage during the festival. Proceeds from the event go to The Carousel Center; a 501c charity that aids abused and neglected youth. A free shuttle service is provided to help festival-goers get home safely.

    Get your tickets here.
