Old Mecklenburg Brewery

Similar to Raleigh’s LoneRider Brewing Company (see KYB #2), Charlotte’s Old Mecklenburg Brewery is a production brewery started by an intrepid team of three. John Marrino, Jon Hayward, and Carey Savoy purchased the old Southend Brewery equipment last year, moving it from its uptown Charlotte location to a nearby manufacturing district. They’re already brewing German-inspired beers and, within a few months, they expect to build out an on-site tap room.

KYB is kinda sorta of based in the Triangle right now (hey, anyone else interested in conducting interviews?), so we corresponded via email with OMB’s Jon Hayward. Hope you enjoy!

KYB: It looks like it’s three of you at the brewery. What do each of you do at the brewery?

Jon:I focus most of my time on sales and marketing. John is the Brewer. He also oversees the general direction of the brewery, brewery operations, marketing and finance. Carey is the Assistant Brewer and does a little bit of everything including all maintenance tasks. Both John and Carey are also currently building out our tap room.

KYB: How did you meet?

Jon: John and I grew up together. We met in elementary school in Massachusetts and thirty years later we both ended up in Charlotte. Cary worked with John at his previous employer.

Two new Charlotte breweries in the works?

Word on the street is that a few breweries are set to open in the Queen City, possibly as soon as the summer of ’09! No details yet, but be sure to check back for all the latest developments…and perhaps an interview or two, if the new owners have time!

Carolina Brewmasters donates $50,000 to charity

December 05, 2008 - CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina BrewMasters are pleased to announce the donation of $50,000 to local charities. The BrewMasters, a Charlotte-based homebrewing club, hosted the 10th annual Charlotte Oktoberfest and this year’s festival proceeds were donated to the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and A Child’s Place.

For ten years the Carolina BrewMasters have organized and hosted the annual craft brew festival, the Charlotte Oktoberfest, and they have always donated their proceeds. “Our festival has always been about 2 issues near and dear to us: educating the Charlotte area on the wonderful qualities of craft beer and giving back to our great city. Our donations started as just a few hundred dollars and have obviously grown substantially for a 100% volunteer-based event managed by a homebrew club”, states Rick Benfield, 2008 club President.

The checks were presented on December 5th, at the club’s monthly membership meeting. Jason Randall, the director of Charlotte Oktoberfest 2008, presented a $25,000 check to Ms. Shannon Hinson, Director of Mass Events with the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and a $25,000 check to Ms. Laurie Schwartz, Development Director with A Child’s Place.

Through A Child’s Place, homeless children are provided with stable, appropriate education in a mainstream setting. The organization ensures that students receive the instruction and professional services they need to achieve academic success: food, clothing, personal hygiene products and school supplies are distributed along with various services and tutors.

The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of MS. The Mid-Atlantic Chapter is committed to a philosophy of wellness, offering the encouragement, materials and skills necessary to achieve and maintain a meaningful lifestyle for people living with multiple sclerosis and their families. The Society serves people with MS, their families and health care professionals through education, advocacy, information, peer support, therapeutic recreation and many other programs.
